Healthy habits can easily be followed, but somehow they fall to the wayside. I think because in a world of busy schedules and chaos we tend to make things more complicated. Especially due to social media screaming into one ear about how we should dress, look and act. We feed into the false advertisement of, “do this everyday for 5 minutes” and they promise to get you a 6 pack of abs, no wrinkles, $1000 cash and the secret to life. Before you know it, you are trying to incorporate a million different things into your already busy life. And your daily routine and to-do list end up looking like a CVS receipt.
So instead, choose to keep it simple. Healthy habits should be practiced on a daily basis. But they should not feel like a chore. You deserve the freedom to enjoy these habits and make them work with your lifestyle.
Healthy Habit #1- Move
Get your blood flowing and your heart pumping. It is up to you how to do it. Aim for raising your heart rate a minimum of 30 minutes per day. You can shoot for 30 minutes in one block of time or split it up. Maybe it is easier to sneak in 10 minute bursts of exercise a few times throughout the day.
If you make it a priority it will happen. I find it best to wake up 30 minutes earlier then you normally do. That way you get it done before your brain even knows whats happening. In all honesty though, how many random things pop up throughout the day. As other tasks come about each day they end up taking precedence over exercising. Then the day is over and the only thing that raised your heart rate was stress. Blah.
So sneak it in first thing in the a.m. to get it done and move on with your day.
Still too busy for that? I get it, I’ve been there too and completely understand. Try one of these easy ways to sneak in exercise on a busy day.
Park in the back of the parking lot. You get a quick power walk and also decrease the risk of getting your car dinged.
Do 3 sets of 10 squats while cooking dinner (will work for food!)
Don’t want to miss the season finale of your fav show? Plank during the commercials and stay active.
Take the steps instead of the elevator.
Use your lunch break to take a walk. Pack a healthy wrap to easily eat along the way.
No excuses, just fit it in. Also, never use your kids, family or friends as an excuse. Incorporate them into your daily movement habit. Play outside with your kids or choose a fun exercise video they can follow along with. Honestly they will think it’s fun and you will create a healthy habit in their life as well.
Business meeting with a colleague or catching up with a friend? Rethink the traditional dinner meet up. Head to the gym or park instead. You could grab a quick bite still. Instead of sitting after the meal and chatting, choose to head outside for a walk.
I have faith in you. No matter how busy or chaotic day is, I know you can fit in some type of movement.
Healthy Habit #2- Love Yourself
So when was the last time you made yourself a priority?Do you even remember when you last nurtured your mind and soul? How do you expect to give 100% to other things and people when you aren’t completely 100%? Let that sink in.
Self care is so important. You can’t pour from an empty cup. The list of commitments and responsibilities is a never ending cycle. Being busy never stops, you wear yourself down and never allow a break, because there is always work to be done. Taking care of you continues to be pushed further down the list. You likely will never get to it if you don’t make YOU a priority.
I vote for a change. You matter and you deserve to be at the top of the list.
Where do you begin? Let’s remember to keep it simple. Life is hectic enough no need for more commitments and chaos.
I really want you to focus on the emotional and mental aspects of self care. A healthy mindset will boost your overall well-being.
Self care should occur on a daily basis. It is not just a quick pick-me-up when you feel down. Keep the positive vibes flowing. Begin by incorporating one self care idea from the list above. Sneak it into your schedule and make it a habit. Shoot for the same time everyday. Start your day with 5 mantras to feel empowered. Try to mediate or read a book for 5-10 minutes before going to bed. Your mind and body will thank you.
Healthy Habit #3- Rest
Without rest your body will not be able to achieve it’s demands. You can’t expect to run yourself ragged everyday and think the best version of you will appear. Chances are it will be the exact opposite.
In today’s society, go-go-go is the norm on a daily basis. It is so normal, that is feel abnormal to sit and rest. We tend to view taking a beak as being selfish or lazy. Are you guilty of this? Rest is so important though. It allows our bodies and minds to recover from the day. Thus, restoring our energy levels and decreasing brain fog.
Choose to go to bed earlier, the dishes can wait (it would be nice if they got up and walked away). Turn off technology at night and allow your brain to shut down. Try to sit in a quiet area for 5 minutes when you first return home from a busy day. Not only is your body crying out for rest, but you totally deserve it.
Reap the benefits of the rest you deserve. I challenge you to rest more than usual for a week and note the difference in your body, both physically and mentally.
So as a recap, practice these 3 simple healthy habits on a daily basis. Move. Love Yourself. Rest. Remember to keep it simple and slowly incorporate them into your daily routine. No need to complicate it. Stay consistent to make it a lifelong healthy habit. Don’t make it feel like a chore. Choose what makes you feel happy and brings you joy.
